Cupcake Wars!
We were given the progect to build a display centered around earth day and our only guidelines were that we had to use 20 cupcakes, have 2 layers, and had to use recycled items. From there we were allowed to let our creativity and artittude run wild. At first my group just started doing research on cupcakes and earth day to find a basis for our project. I found a picture of a cupcake that looked like a tree with a cupcake on top. I shared my idea with the group and they loved it, Taylor had the idea that we could stack 2 pop cans together and put the cupcake on top, she knew from girl scouts that the cupcake would fit on top perfectly. We then decided that we could spray paint the cans brown but that was not realistic enough yet. So, we decided to go outside pick off sticks, cut them to the correct size then hot glue them to our cans so we could have some texture, look more realistic, and more importantly keep our project really centered around the earth and earth day. In the meantime Erica focused on our base she knew that she could use some cardboard from boxes at her work that way we could recycle ad have a broad base of support. We decided because it was a forest we would spay paint it green, we needed grass though so we thought about using easter grass since easter just passed but decided that wasnt really recycled enough or really creative so we decided to take newspaper, paint it green, then put it through the shreader in order to achieve a perfect recycled grass texture, then we used plastic cement to apply the grass to our base. Once we placed of cans on our structure we thought it looked a little dreary so we decided to use green laffy taffy to make leaves for our trees so that our project was more edible. Now it was cupcake time, we decided to balance our display by having 10 trees and 10 flowers on the ground. We were unaware at first that we had to have a theme for our project so we then decided that we knew Crayola is very green and for every tree they use a new one is planted. We decided this would be our theme. So instead of having just green cupcakes on the top of our display we would make pencil tops with different colors as our tree tops, we did this in order to show our theme. Next we decided that we would use actual colored pencils, dip them in was and hot glue different facts about Crayola and recycling on cardboard and hot glue them to the colored pencils. Next we decided that we should make green shrubs on the bottom instead of flowers so the scene flowed better and we could put our colored pencils into the cupcakes without it being too much. Before we placed our real cupcakes on the structure we had to put plain cupcakes on our display to makes sure that our display would support the cupcakes and so that we could see if we liked our display with the cupcakes in our original desired location for them. We did end up loving them. Then the next day we put it all together and it was ready for the judges to see. Our hard work payed off and we were all pleased with our project.
